Paper Pleat Exploration

About Pleatformation

Pleatformation is a group of third year architecture students at The University of Auckland. We are doing a design paper called PLURAFORM_V3 tutored by Derek Kawaiti and Yunwei Xu. We are focusing on ‘matter/information’ - the marks and traces that outline various stages or projections (possible habitations or natural figures) that are evident upon the ‘face’ of selected territories or landscapes. Much of the data that we collect in the initial stages of this paper will be tested in various ways in order to decipher or to draw out latent strains and tendencies that constitute ‘identities’ or site characters.

Many of these traces may be understood as resultant of both natural or immanent configurations ofmatter and force. Shaping – ‘outside’ of our interventions (or at least how we understand/perceive it to be) to that of our own shaping (intervention) and boundary making.

As a group we have been assigned to look at Force and Intesnity on a site of our choice, Tawharanui ,Omaha and Goats island has been our focus area. We have looked at different scale shifts known as 10^4 ranging from 10km,1km, 100m, and 10 meter. The forces and intensities that stood out on the site to us was wind and tide flow.

Looking at wind and tide flow in an abstract sense and breaking in down into form. We have seen the Pleat form as a way of structurally creating our force and intensity. Our blog is a development of our progress of the pleat.
